Chalupáři TV Series: Filming in the Village Třešňová, Lively Actress Mahulena Bočanová, and Bugs in the Episodes

The eleven-part TV series Chalupáři was filmed in the mid-1970s in a small village near Příbram called Višňová. And for screenwriters Václav Pavel Borovička and František Vlček to demonstrate sufficient creativity, they renamed the village Třešňová. By the way, the cost of this brilliant idea exceeded 12 million CZK. The film remaster in 2021 also cost many millions.

Perhaps the youngest witness to the series is the popular actress Mahulena Bočanová. At the time of filming, she did not even go to elementary school and this was her first acting experience in front of the camera. She was a very lively child, as evidenced by the fact that she managed to break her head during the filming and also fell under Čestmír Řand’s car in the final episode Wedding.

“Mr. Řanda was coming to the wedding in a Mercedes, and we children were supposed to run to him. But because of how competitive I was since I was a child, I outpaced everyone, despite the director’s disapproval. But at that speed, my foot slipped on the gravel and I drove straight under the oncoming car. I cried, but luckily nothing happened to me. However, Mr. Řanda had to be taken to the hospital. Because the mad scare made him sick,” she recalled years later, Mahulena Bočanová.

It is also not without interest that the series could not be broadcast for a long time. It was because of Waldemar Matušek, who sang the title theme song When you have an orchestra in your cottage. But he emigrated to America in 1986, and The cottagers got “zarach”. At the time, communist censorship solved the whole situation in its own way – instead of a song, an instrumental undertone was played, and the nightingale from Madrid did not return until many years later.

Bugs crept in

In the first episode titled Poor grandpa if the Krbcs move out of their existing apartment into a panel house, they won’t have to haul coal. However, there is no stove in the apartment, nor are there any radiators to be seen.
Even the incorrect weighing of the carp did not escape the astute viewers in the second episode! It cost 28.60 CZK, a kilo of carp was 15 CZK, so it weighed almost two kilos. But the scale only weighs up to a kilo, then it would have to be balanced with a counterweight. The seller didn’t use it. In episode four titled Falcons the chairman is on the phone in the pub, but there is no electricity in the village. Huml and Evžen in the sixth episode called Magistrates poop, while they had already dated each other before. In the seventh episode titled Romeo from the bus there are said to be the most mistakes. For example, Tonda falls into a tub of laundry during a fight and is all wet. In the next shot, when he is looking for Anička played by Gabriela Vránová, he is already dry. In this work, Slávek is also waiting for Vlasta in Vyšehrad, even though it was only 500 meters from the apartment in Dlouhá, where he lived, to the Old Town Square, where the bus arrived with the villagers. AND Vladimír Menšík, who was driving the bus but wasn’t really driving because he couldn’t, at one point he appears both in front of the bus and as the chauffeur behind the wheel. Amazing magic!
