There can be no doubt that the Czech TV series “Chalupáři”, which has been entertaining viewers for almost fifty years, is one of the most successful ever filmed in our country. Its popularity is proven by the fact that, even after many reruns, it is still ranked among the most watched shows. This is also the case during this year’s holidays, when ČT, aware of its extraordinary popularity, is showing it again.
However, some critics came to the opinion that what is too much is too much, and so they came up with the idea that they should make a new “Cottage Man”. All the more so because the original ones are after all largely due to the socialist era, even though the authors Václav Pavel Borovička and František Vlček tried to eliminate it as much as possible. The success of their script lies primarily in the fact that they were inspired by the stories of real cottagers from the village of Markoušovice, even though the series is set in the fictional village of Třešňová. One of the witnesses managed to contact Kateřina Adamcová, who published his story on her blog on the Idnes.cz website.
Nothing is contrived
Jiří Laštovička boasted to her that he knew Mr. Borovička because he also bought a cottage in this village and was friends with the local old-timers. He himself helped him install electricity in his cottage. After work, he said, they had wine and he told him various stories, either from his life or other people from the Krkonoše Mountains. “Nothing is made up, nothing is a little exaggerated, but everything really happened, that’s why the Cottagers are so real”. he told Kateřina in an engaging interview, revealing to her that the stories about the cottagers’ trip to Prague are real. And he also mentioned that he didn’t have an orchestra at home, but a harmonium. And it is even said that originally everything was supposed to be filmed in Markousovice, but due to the distance from Prague, the central Bohemian village of Višňová was finally chosen.
Finally a remake!
This week, the editors of the weekly Reflex thought about what the cast might look like if the Czech Television decided to film a remake of “Chalupáří”, given that it “refreshes” its concessionaires every holiday with reruns of normalizing films and series from the 70s and 80s, and it is “Chalupáří” that leads them. According to them, this “worn series” could get a new shine thanks to new creators and actors. The script would be “slightly rewritten” by Jan Prušinovský and Petr Kolečko, and Petr Zelenka would take over the direction. Then they came to the opinion that the only actor who would be able to replace the choleric Evžen Huml played by Josef Sovák is Miroslav Krobot, while the ideal representative of the new Divine Emperor (Josef Kemr) would be Ivan Trojan, who “plays anything”.
As for Dáša Fuchsová, it is clear that Jiřina Bohdalová (one of the few original cast members still alive) can no longer play the role of the village seductress, so they recommend the charming Elizaveta Maximová instead. She is waiting for a big acting opportunity and this could be a “breakthrough like thunder”. Nevertheless, the jokers from Reflex are counting on “Bohdalka”, but this time as the gossipy Brabcová, who was originally played by Stella Zázvorková. And also other suggestions for the star cast of the Dejvický Theater are worth it: for example, Václav Neužil would certainly be an excellent replacement for Vladimír Menšík in the role of the flirtatious bus driver, and his wife Anička (originally Gabriela Vránová) would be Klára Melíšková.
So let’s hope that he will not stick to the Reflex editorial plan and the new director of Czech Television, who promises to bring a new wind, will understand that not only public institutions, but also Chalupář need a radical change.
Serial Cottagers you can watch it on ČT1 on Sunday, July 23 from 8:10 p.m.
