Government China accuse United States of America muddled and exacerbated the dispute by sending the destroyer-type warship USS John McCain across the Strait Taiwan.
They also challenge that if the US continues to act in this way by showing military strength, then they can also send warships to sail as far as the Gulf of Mexico.
According to the spokesman for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Zhao Lijian, at a press conference in Beijing, Thursday (8/4), the US attitude of sending warships through the Taiwan Strait is a form of provocation.
“It creates the wrong signal to Taiwan and threatens the peace and stability of the Taiwan Strait. Do Chinese warships have to sail up to the Gulf of Mexico to show strength?” Zhao said.
The US Navy argued that the warship USS John McCain was only conducting routine voyages through the Taiwan Strait. Instead, they stated that they highlighted China’s attitude in sending fighter jets and warships to approach Taiwan as a form of intimidation.
The US government said it would continue to support Taiwan from Chinese threats.
Meanwhile, China believes the US is conspiring with pro-independence groups to continue to support independent Taiwan from China. Meanwhile, the President of Taiwan, Tsai Ing-wen, declared them an independent country and called the Republic of China.
Until now, the Taiwan problem has become an obstacle for the US and China in the diplomatic field.
In 2015, five Chinese warships sailed to the Bering Sea near Alaska.
