Challenging Driving Conditions for Winter Holiday Travel in Eastern Norway

(Elbil24): A lot of rainfall and rising temperatures in Eastern Norway can cause challenging driving conditions on the way to the winter holidays. The biggest departure days will be Thursday and Friday, the Norwegian Road Administration writes in a press release.

In many places in the country, the traffic picture so far in 2024 has been characterized by a lot of snow and changing temperatures. This has resulted in challenging driving conditions on many roads, and often in areas that are popular cottage and winter holiday destinations.

The entrance to this year’s winter holiday outing is no exception, with rain, sleet and sometimes plus temperatures. This will affect the major departure days, Thursday and Friday.

– Be extra sharp

– Winter roads are challenging to drive on. It requires a lot of attention and good planning from you as a driver, says director of traffic safety in the Norwegian Road Administration, Guro Ranes. She continues:

– This winter holiday you have to be extra sharp.

Most traffic is expected from the largest cities. The Norwegian Public Roads Administration encourages you to check the weather forecast and the route you will be driving. On the website vegvesen.no/trafikk and in the Vegvesen traffic app you will find information about the route you will be driving.

Reminder of the rule of thumb

The Swedish Road Administration points out that on winter driving it is even more important to remember the rule think – do – drive!

– That means planning your trip and preparing as much as you can before you drive, so that you have all your attention on driving, says Ranes.

This is how the remember rule is explained by the National Road Administration:

“Think about what can take your attention away from the traffic before you drive: the phone ringing or lighting up in the seat next to you, something you need to grab on the way or children who want help with something in the back seat.

FINISH what you can before you drive: Set the GPS and the music, put the mobile away, eat the food and get those in the back seat ready for the start.

DRIVE!”

– Driving is the only thing you should do, Ranes concludes.
