Challenges Persist in Ukrainian Armed Forces Counter-Offensive in Zaporozhye Region

The armed forces continue their counter-offensive in the Melitopol direction of the Zaporozhye region, but the situation remains difficult due to additional Russian concrete fortifications and dense minefields.

Literally: “The Ukrainian General Staff reported that Ukrainian troops are conducting offensive operations in the Melitopol direction (the western part of the Zaporozhye region). Russian miblogers, who recently claimed that Russian troops were holding positions in the southern part of Robotino, said that Russian troops had withdrawn from the southern outskirts of the populated point to indeterminate positions further south.”

Details: Analysts say Russian troops are dropping flammable substances into mined fields and setting them on fire with drone grenades in an attempt to thwart mine-clearing efforts.

At the same time, the commander of the intelligence center of the Estonian Defense Forces, Colonel Margo Grosberg, said that the Ukrainian artillery capabilities are “equal or even better” than those of the Russian forces, and they were able to push the Russian artillery units away from the front line, preventing them from supporting Russian troops.

“This sighting is not universal across the front line as Ukrainian units regularly report being hit by heavy Russian artillery fire that is being corrected by Russian drones,” the ISW report said.

Grosberg also said that since July, Ukrainian forces have successfully disabled Russian artillery radars. At the same time, analysts recalled that Russian sources have repeatedly expressed concern since mid-July about the lack of counter-battery artillery in Russia, especially in southern Ukraine.
