The slaughterhouse in northern Moselle is in dire straits. While its construction was supposed to begin this summer in Thionville, the banks suddenly made an about-face. This Thursday in Thionville, the cooperative society of collective interests which carries the project convened a general meeting of shareholders. The breeders of northern Lorraine, for whom this production tool is intended, responded in large numbers to the call and tongues were loosened.
Dissensions in the agricultural world seem to have weighed heavily on the reasons for the non-financing agreement. However, the nine local authorities committed to the tune of more than €2M in the cooperative’s capital still want to believe in it and have offered to use all their weight to try to obtain the €2.475M bank loan necessary to launch construction. They have six weeks to obtain a result. If a serious plan B is not found by November 15, then the cooperative will be dissolved. “It would be a huge waste,” said its president, who has been fighting to build this slaughterhouse for more than ten years.
