Challenges for Julian Nagelsmann as Germany’s National Team Coach

After a couple of years filled with fiascos, Hansi Flick was fired recently.

Julian Nagelsmann has taken over as the new national team captain, with a clear goal: the EC gold will go home to Germany this summer. But the former RB Leipzig and Bayern Munich coach has had a tough start to his mission.

Four international training matches have been played under his leadership so far. Conclusion? One win, one draw – and two straight losses.

On Tuesday evening, “Die Mannschaft” fell 2-0 away to Austria after Marcel Sabitzer and Christoph Baumgartner scored the goals. But it was something other than just the loss that ended up in German focus afterwards.

At the beginning of the second half, Leroy Sané lost his composure completely. After a duel with Phillipp Mwene, the Bayern star was left lying on the ground, whereupon he stood up and pushed Mwene in the face with both hands. The outcome was as much a given as a red card.

Obvious frustration in the German camp, then. It was also Sané’s first red card in his 402 game career.

– It can’t get worse than this. That’s the only positive right now, says Ilkay Gündogan to ZDF after the final whistle.

Sport1 journalist Patrick Berger is critical:

“This German team, according to the media, would not qualify for European Championship 2024. Fortunately, the DFB team automatically has a place there as host,” he writes on X.

Germany is the host nation for European Championship 2024.
