Staying in the shelters set up by New York City has become complicated for some immigrant families, as robberies and fights have become a constant within them.
Univision 41 obtained videos provided by some immigrants about a fight that occurred in the first days of January outside the Row Hotel in Midtown, Manhattan.
In the videos you can see one group of immigrants fighting with another in the surrounding streets.
“They burst bottles, they brought knives, everything and the police couldn’t control this or didn’t want to,” said an immigrant who spoke on condition of anonymity.
“There are no controls on anything,” says the immigrant
He added that the situation in several shelters is similar, with gangs of people who are dedicated to stealing from other newcomers and there is even drug use.
“There are no controls on anything there. Everyone there says it’s Sodom and Gomorrah. There it’s every man for himself. Do whatever you want,” she added.
“If they were to do a sweep inside the hotel, they would find warehouses inside the hotel for all the clothes they stole,” he added.
I indicate that many of those who stay there have not looked for work.
“There are some who have lived more than a year and do not work, they are not given a work permit, they are not given anything. Others already have it (the permit), but they continue to live for free, they do not work,” said the asylum seeker.
Darwin Jiménez lives in one of the shelters in Harlem, where the curfew will be applied, and although he says that the situation there is calm, in others there are problems.
“At least in this shelter I feel very safe, very good. On the other hand, in Brooklyn and Randall’s Island, that is something else.”

Although it is believed that the incident occurred due to a problem or damage to the rails, the MTA doubts that it was due to lack of maintenance. “We did an inspection in November,” said Richard Davey, president of NYC Transit.

Users of the New York subway service expressed their dissatisfaction with what happened in the most recent derailment and blame the MTA, arguing that there must be better maintenance. “You can see that the system is not working,” they said.
