Challenges and Hopes: The Need for a New and Inclusive FFF Group in Bremen

When my parents moved from St. Petersburg to Bremen in July 1992, it was a stroke of luck for me. The Hanseatic city on the Weser is a place of diversity and tolerance. 37 percent of the residents have a migration background, and there is also a visible alternative scene.

Despite or precisely because of this, there is strong cohesion in the urban community. With all these differences, as a Jew, you don’t really stand out. I have always felt very comfortable here.

Stage Last year, however, I was disappointed to discover that the local Fridays for Future (FFF) section had offered a stage to the anti-Semitic group »Palästina Spricht«. FFF Bremen reacted snippy to contradiction and was unreasonable. Although there were many Jewish people among the critics, FFF described them in general terms as “low-level” and “insulting.”

We need an FFF group in Bremen that also deserves the name.

It is said that people should normally be listened to in progressive spaces. But that doesn’t seem to apply to Jews. The climate movement has been simmering for a long time. The FFF International Twitter account accuses Israel of “neo-colonialism” and “apartheid” in a tweet shared by the Bremen group. However, the German Federal Association clearly distanced itself from this. There they are trying to get serious about anti-Semitism in the climate movement.

Dialog Now FFF Bremen has dissolved. The group justified this, among other things, with “the issue of the Middle East conflict”: They see themselves disparaged by the media and abandoned by the federal association. However, your handling of criticism shows that the reasons lie with FFF Bremen itself. Instead of facing up to it, you refused any dialogue and made yourself impossible as a potential partner in Bremen.

The dissolution now paved the way for a new beginning. We need a strong climate movement and an FFF group in Bremen that is worthy of the name.
