Challenges and Frustrations with Microsoft Teams Meetings: A Non-Windows User’s Experience

I rarely if ever do Teams meetings, only when our client insists.

Just last Friday that the client wanted me to log in, that didn’t work because we don’t have a paid Teams subscription (it used to not be necessary, nowadays you do if you already use other licenses within your company). The “log in” popup kept flickering (literally, flickering) and was not responsive.

Finally being able to click away that terribly annoying popup, I was finally able to enter the meeting, which had already been going on for 3 minutes (without logging in, as a guest). Couldn’t anyone hear me. Made another Zoom call just before that, no problem.

Leave the client for what it was, leave the meeting, and then try the web version. In both Safari and Chrome I couldn’t get past the “launch the app” / “continue via web” button (I don’t remember the exact copy). After messing around with that for another 5 minutes, I finally restarted my laptop (because in the meantime my battery was empty, according to MacOS by Teams) and grabbed my iPad in the bedroom and installed Teams on it.

I couldn’t get into that meeting from either side without logging in first. Finally logged in with my private (not business) account and then copied the link from my iPhone and pasted it into Safari on the iPad, in order to get into the meeting.

Long story short, I missed the first (thick) 15 minutes and repeated things a few times that apparently had already been discussed before the last 30 minutes of the call.

Today round 2, same customer. Teams removed, reinstalled, logged in with private Microsoft account (because yes, see first paragraph). meeting joined. All worked immediately. Audio often lagged behind the video or vice versa, I got a big error message when sharing the screen (something with a white cross on a red background) but it did work.

Teams, as a non-Windows user, is and remains a dragon of an app.
