Challenges and Controversies at the Four Days Marches 2023: Fainting, Blisters, and Safety Car Hassle

18 July 2023 at 18:50

A remarkable number of Four Days Marches runners fell at the end of their walk on Tuesday. According to the Red Cross, standing still after exercise in combination with heat and alcohol is enough to cause people who are sensitive to it to faint.

Although, according to the Red Cross, “a remarkable number” of people fainted, no serious incidents occurred on the first day of the Four Days Marches.

However, many people had to be treated at the finish area because of blisters. The aid organization thinks that runners wanted to be back in Nijmegen before the greatest heat and therefore walked through with blisters. The Red Cross expects to be busy taking care of many hundreds of blisters until Tuesday evening.

Rain is expected on the way for Wednesday. The Red Cross advises walkers to bring dry socks, because wet socks cause blisters. Anyone who puts on a poncho because of the rain must take it off immediately after the shower, otherwise there is a risk of overheating.

Hassle about safety car

There was also a lot to do today about the so-called safety car, a novelty at this Four Days Marches. The car drives ahead of the walking legion to check whether the course is safe.

For example, roads must be closed and diversions set up because of the Four Days Marches. In the past, it sometimes happened that fast walkers were already somewhere before a closure was arranged. This could lead to dangerous situations.

The safety car was not popular. A small proportion of the walkers refused to adapt to the speed of the car. If this happens again on Wednesday, people will be kicked out of the Four Days Marches.
