In the circulating video, the chaos ensued as Deputy Minister of Religion Zainut Tauhid Saadi was delivering remarks by President Joko Widodo.
Apparently, a number of PMII members who were on the north side started protesting. Not long after, the attendees rioted and threw chairs at each other.
In his speech, Zainut addressed the figures present, starting with DPR Deputy Chairman Muhaimin Iskandar, Tulungagung Regent, UIN Rector Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah ai Polres and Dandim.
However, when he was about to greet the PBNU officials who were present, he suddenly cut short his speech due to the commotion.
Tulungagung Police Public Relations Chief Iptu Muhammad Anshori confirmed the incident. He said the incident started when a student party wanted to meet the figures who were present at the event.
“He wanted to ask to meet one of the figures first. Well actually he wanted to be accepted but only as a representative but the other students don’t want to have to meet together,” Ashori told CNNIndonesia.com.
“The trial has just passed. Now it’s safe. Now the activities have started again and it’s favorable,” he said.
Contacted separately, PMII Committee Chairman Muspimnas Moh. Arifin said that even though there was chaos, according to him, the Muspimnas was still functioning optimally.
“Technically, Muspimnas performed optimally, although there were some technical issues that were finally resolved,” said Arifin. CNNIndonesia.com.
He said the riots occurred due to the actions of individuals who from the outset intended to thwart PMII 2022 Muspimnas.
“A bit of a moment of chaos that occurred at the opening of the Muspimnas occurred due to elements that from the very beginning were intended to hinder the PMII 2022 Muspimnas,” he said.
PMII Muspimnas at UIN Tulungagung is currently still ongoing. The agenda is scheduled for November 17-24, 2022.
