Chairman of the Dutch Security Council calls when busy …

The chairman of the Security Council in the Netherlands, Hubert Bruls, also expects the coming weekends to be busy in Dutch cities because of Sinterklaas and Christmas, he says at the NOS. According to Bruls, it is particularly important to do something about the influx of Belgian day trippers.

“In the southern cities, such as Eindhoven, Breda and Maastricht, we see many Belgian guests. We cannot have that with us. They come to the Netherlands to shop because the non-essential shops in Belgium are closed, ”says Bruls, who is also mayor of Nijmegen.

Many cars with Belgian number plates were also on display in Rotterdam this weekend. “Only we as mayors cannot do much about it: this is really a cabinet issue and something between two member states”, Bruls told the NOS. “But agreements must certainly be made about this.”

According to him, not only Belgians are a point of attention, according to the NOS. “In the coming weeks, there are things we need to pay close attention to. You want to avoid what happened this weekend in cities like Eindhoven and Rotterdam. If that does not work, we have to intervene. ”

One possibility, he says, is closing the retail trade if it remains busy and uncontrollable in the shopping streets. “I do not rule out that you do have to agree on something to work together as mayors. But now, after this weekend, that is not necessary yet. ”
