Chairman of the DPR RI Ma’am Maharani Expresses Objection to Exclusion of Palestinian Issue in P20 Summit Statement

Jakarta

Chairman of the DPR RI Ma’am Maharani said that in the joint statement at the 9th G20 Parliamentary Speaker’s Summit or P20 which was held in India, there was no mention of the issue of Palestinian peace with Israel. Together with a number of parliamentary leaders from other countries, Puan expressed objections.

The joint statement is the conclusion of various session sessions at the P20 Summit, which is a parliamentary forum for the G20 countries. After several days of the session, the P20 members made conclusions regarding the global issues that were discussed during the session.

The 9th P20 Session was held at the Yashoboomi Convention Center, New Delhi, India. This multilateral forum was attended by the Chairmen of the P20 Member Parliaments and their delegations, as well as invited countries and representatives of international organizations.

There were 29 point joint statements produced, one of which was regarding peace issues related to conflicts and wars in a number of countries. In its contents, P20 highlights the suffering of the people of countries at war and the negative impact of war and conflict on the whole world.

Even though he touched on the impact of the war in Ukraine, which is currently in conflict with Russia, he did not mention the issue of Palestinian independence. Even though the escalation of the Israeli-Palestinian war is currently increasing.

A number of countries then initiated a joint reservation (joint objection) because the issue of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict was not included in the conclusion of the P20 Summit. Indonesia, led by Puan, also signed a statement of objection in the hope that the Palestine issue would be included in the joint statement of the P20 Session.

“This reservation was made not because we do not agree on the Ukrainian issue, but because other issues in the world such as the Palestinian issue are not included, so it seems to be unbalanced,” said Puan in a written statement, Saturday (14/10/2023).

Several other countries that also signed the objection statement were Turkey, China, South Africa and Russia. Puan hopes that this objection can be considered further.

“We hope that the objections raised by Indonesia, Turkey, China, South Africa and Russia can be considered by the P20 forum so that the issue of peace in Palestine also gets attention,” said Puan.

The issue of Palestinian independence was also discussed by Puan during a bilateral meeting with the Chairman of the Turkish Grand National Assembly, Numan Kurtulmus. The meeting of the two parliamentary chairs was held on the sidelines of the P20 Summit. At the start of the meeting, Puan supported Turkey’s efforts for peace between Israel and Palestine.

“I appreciate Turkiye’s initiative to continue to make diplomatic efforts to defuse the conflict. We must avoid civilians becoming victims of the war and conflict currently occurring in Palestine,” he said.

For the sake of creating Israeli-Palestinian peace, Puan called for acts of violence to be stopped immediately. Puan reminded that many victims had fallen as a result of the war.

“Violence will only give rise to the next violence (cycle of violence) whose victims will ultimately be civilians,” he said.

In front of the Speaker of the Turkish Parliament, Puan also emphasized the importance of world countries immediately providing humanitarian assistance or opening humanitarian corridors. He also encouraged the international community to provide assistance in efforts to open the blockade for residents in the Gaza Strip.

“It is also necessary to immediately resolve the root of the problem in Palestine. This can be done by realizing the formation of an independent Palestinian state, in accordance with the parameters agreed at the UN,” said Puan.

In this multilateral forum, Puan was present with the Chair of the Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation Agency (BKSAP) Fadli Zon, Deputy Chair of BKSAP Gilang Dhielafararez, as well as BKSAP members Charles Honoris and Irine Yosiana Roba Putri. Also accompanying Puan were the Indonesian Ambassador to India Ina Krisnamurthi and Secretary General of the DPR RI Indra Iskandar.
