Chairman Choi had a private tea meeting with CEO Lee at the SK AI Summit event held at COEX in Seoul on the morning of the 4th.
It is known that the tea meeting on this day was held at the request of Representative Lee. It is interpreted that Representative Lee made the request to listen to the voices of the business community following a series of meetings with small business owners and self-employed people.
The meeting was held privately at 11:45 a.m. From the SK Group, Chairman Chey Tae-won, SK Supex Council Communication Committee Chairman Lee Hyeong-hee, and SK Telecom Vice President Yoo Kyung-sang attended, while from the Democratic Party, Representative Lee, Chief Spokesperson Cho Seung-rae, and Chief of Staff Lee Hae-sik attended.
Representative Lee said at the tea party, “I need to help you, but I’m sorry I can’t,” and Chairman Choi responded, “There are many parts of the law that are not structured. Even if you try to come up with new ideas, there are some parts that don’t work.”
At a private tea meeting, CEO Lee and Chairman Choi reportedly discussed the institutional support needed for the economic community in the AI era. In particular, it is known that CEO Lee was interested in AI such as Chat GPT and continued to ask questions to Chairman Choi.
Chairman Choi also emphasized institutional support for AI in the keynote speech given earlier at the tea ceremony.
Chairman Choi said, “Concerns about AI are also concerns at the national level. Korea played a leading role in entering the Internet era,” and added, “In order to play its role in the AI era, it will be necessary to cultivate talent appropriate for the AI era. Additionally, national “We also need to discuss strategic plans,” he emphasized.
Representative Lee had a brief conversation about AI with Chairman Lee Hyung-hee while moving to the tea party venue. Chairman Lee explained, “We are racing against time as a huge market is scheduled to open. It is a battle to decide whether to be a consumer or a seller,” and CEO Lee said, “If we fall even half a step behind, we could be ruined.”
Meanwhile, Chairman Choi also had a tea meeting with the People Power Party Policy Committee before the tea meeting with Representative Lee. Attending the tea party were People Power Party Policy Committee Chairman Kim Sang-hoon, National Assembly Science, Technology, Information, Broadcasting and Communications Committee member Choi Hyeong-du, and Health and Welfare Committee member Choi Bo-yoon.
At this event, Chairman Choi said, “What is most needed right now for the future is AI infrastructure. The current domestic level is very different from global big tech,” adding, “Korea is less than 1/100th of the big tech in the United States.” “It doesn’t make sense to compete when it’s the right size,” he said.
Chairman Choi said, “Supplying only memory chips each time is an unacceptable problem in terms of future growth,” and added, “If Korea has a strong manufacturing sector, it must create several strengths by holding on to manufacturing AI.”
