The defending champions failed to beat the Montrealers at home.
He will therefore continue his career with Girona FC, in La Liga, to whom he has been loaned until June 2023. Girona FC is a member club of the City Groupwho own New York City FC and Manchester City, among others.
NYCFC are second in the MLS East Division with 41 points in the standings. Wilfried Nancy’s squad are two places lower, thanks to their 35 points in 21 games this season.
Each team could jump up one place in the standings if they win.
Before kick-off – CF Montreal pays tribute to its former assistant coach Jason Di Tullio, who succumbed to cancer on Friday at the age of only 38.
7e minute – A minute of silence is observed in honor of Jason Di Tullio, who donned the number 7 with the Impact.
10e minute – Romell Quioto is mowed down in the box by NYCFC goalkeeper Sean Johnson, but the CF Montreal forward is offside.
12e minute – Samuel Piette, on the edge of the surface, goes there with a bell pass for Djordje Mihailovic, who misses with a header. Then, Kamal Miller is unable to convert the ball which falls at his feet.
17e minute – Nice association between Lassi Lappalainen and Djordje Mihailovic which results in a pass in the area for Romell Quioto. The latter should have shot in first intention, but did not, and is thus taken over by the defender who releases.
23e minute – Nice opening from number 8 of CF towards Lappalainen, who arms a curled shot towards the far post. However, his shot deflects off Mason Toye, who is offside, before narrowly missing the target.
29e minute – Another interesting relay from Mihailovic towards Toye, who tries to cross, but hits the side Tayvon Gray in the middle of the pear. The trainers have to come, and Gray leaves on the sidelines. The CF inherits a corner kick.
30e minute – Mihailovic’s corner serve is weak and dives towards the near post, but a chance deflection redirects the ball over Quioto at the far post, who however misses his header and sends the ball home for 1642.
35e minute – Joel Waterman sends a soft pass to Alistair Johnston. NYCFC Brazilian winger Talles Magno tries to intercept, but he makes contact with Johnston who has attempted some sort of roulette on the ball. The arms of the Montreal defender are high, and by doing so he hangs his opponent in the face. This one collapses on the ground, and the 22 in black and blue inherits a yellow card.
40e minute – Maxi Morález is uncomfortable. The 35-year-old midfielder asks his coach for a change, which obliges. Thiago Andrade takes his place on the field.
42e minute – Another great combination of Lappalainen and Mihailovic, who make one-two. It was the American who finished with the ball in the area, but his two shot attempts were blocked. One by the defender, the other by the goalkeeper.
44e minute – Very close to the left corner kick post, Lassi Lappalainen thwarts his cover Santiago Rodríguez, who grabs and pushes him, just outside the area. The CF obtains a free kick, but cannot take advantage of it.
48e minute – A NYCFC corner kick from Gabriel Pereira literally flies through the Montreal penalty box, but no one is able to thread the needle. At this point, NYCFC still has no shot on target.
53e minute – A NYCFC counter-attack takes shape following an ordinary corner kick from the Foot Club. Shortly after midfield, Joel Waterman fouls Gabriel Pereira and deserves a yellow card. He will be suspended for the next meeting of the Montrealers.
55e minute – Kamal Miller goes there with a miraculous rescue in his surface, which by the same fact propels Quioto in counter-attack. While this one breaks away from a first defender and attracts another towards him, he puts on his right to Mason Toye, who benefits from an open goal and… he misses the target! The crowd, his teammates and especially the main interested party are biting their fingers.
56e minute – Lassi launches Quioto on the right of Sean Johnson, and this one waits too long before arming his shot, so that he almost shoots when he is level with the goal line. Immediately, number 30 turns to his trainer, who can’t believe it, and apologizes.
61e minute – Santiago Rodríguez and Héber come off the field for the American formation. Nicolás Acevedo and Andres Jasson enter.
74e minute – The game must be stopped as Joel Waterman remained on the ground after suffering ankle contact. He manages to chase the pain away and will be able to continue in the game.
79e minute – Wilfried Nancy makes his first changes. Kei Kamara enters for Mason Toye, and Mathieu Choinière replaces Lassi Lappalainen.
82e minute – Two other changes for CF Montreal. Joaquin Torres and Ismaël Koné take the places of Djordje Mihailovic and Samuel Piette.
