The bad news about energy prices is endless. They even intensify. It seems that the biggest wave of electricity and gas price hikes is just now upon us. Already a month ago, the ČEZ company, which is mainly dominant in the field of electricity supply, decided to massively raise the price of these energies, and other suppliers usually follow suit.
Why not even more
Even then, people complained that they could no longer afford to pay such high prices. Payments for some households have increased several times, and especially people who heat their houses with a gas boiler have really big problems. While last year they paid 40,000 for gas, today they pay 130,000 for the same consumption. And on top of that, a significant increase in electricity.
However, it turns out that even these extreme prices are not enough to cover the increase in energy prices on the exchanges. And that’s why ČEZ decided to raise prices further. This time it is a bit milder, but it should be noted that the already extreme prices are rising. Moreover, no one can say that this is the last price increase. Rather not.
The higher prices do not apply to existing customers with fixation, but to new clients and those whose fixation will end. The truth is that last year one megawatt-hour of electricity was sold on the stock exchange for 50 euros, but today it is already 300 euros.
Record prices and profits
Still, people don’t understand why the state isn’t doing something about it. CEZ is still perceived as a state-owned company. But that is not the case at all. A thirty percent share in it is owned by minority shareholders. And management must act with the care of a proper steward, which translates to maximizing profit if possible.
This leads to a truly schizophrenic situation where, on the one hand, households no longer have a way to pay their energy bills, but ČEZ, which still belongs dominantly to the state, is celebrating record profits and its management is sharing hundreds of millions in bonuses.
“Nobody can explain this to me. We produce more electricity than the Czechia needs, we export it, and it is constantly making it more expensive for people. They just want to destroy us” believes Mr. Albert, who is greatly troubled by rising energy prices.
