Update Ceylin del Carmen Alvarado will not win the Hexia Cross Gullegem. The Dutchwoman was the absolute top favorite for the separate cyclo-cross, but gave up in the third round. Alpecin-Deceuninck has now announced that Alvarado was suffering from back pain.
When Alvarado gave up, she was in fifth place. Marion Norbert Riberolle had just passed her in the tough mud cross, while Manon Bakker, Inge van der Heijden and Zoe Bäckstedt had been ahead of her the entire race.
Alvarado gets a second chance tomorrow. The Alpecin-Deceuninck rider will then be at the start of the Zonhoven World Cup. She is first in that regularity ranking.
Update 16.03
Alpecin-Deceuninck has announced why Alvarado gave up in the Gullegem cross. The cyclocross rider had problems with her back, the team wrote on social media. It is not yet known whether Sunday’s Zonhoven World Cup will also be in jeopardy.
