CESP asks Madeiran mayors to close supermarkets on 1 May

The Trade Union, Office and Services Workers Union of Portugal (CESP) sent today, April 24, an open letter to all the mayors of the Region calling for the closure of the Super, Hypermarkets and specialized chains, on the 1st of May, so that workers can enjoy Labor Day.

Prevented from issuing a strike notice due to the current state of emergency, the CESP management considers that the supply of essential goods to the population is not jeopardized if these commercial establishments close on the 1st of May, appealing to the mayors its closure “as a sign of recognition and appreciation for these workers who throughout this pandemic and despite all personal fears and exhaustion, remain at the forefront, daily in their workplaces, putting their health and their health at risk. for the benefit of all of us, ”says the union’s national directorate.

If this request is not granted, CESP and the workers speak of “an unacceptable disregard for all those who ‘wear the shirt’ every day and who are currently exhausted, distressed and depressed”, lamenting that the “greed for profit is override the legitimate right of these workers ”.

CESP also sent an open letter to distribution companies, super and hypermarkets and specialized chains.
