Banks in the Czech Republic are constantly introducing new and new products that they offer to their clients. They are usually different versions of the original ones, but they are wrapped in a marketing garb to make them sell better. Investments, for example, are a big hit at the moment, on which banks are literally fattening their pockets, as they charge really high fees.
They know what’s good for you
On the contrary, other services no longer pay for them, so they cancel them without caring whether it suits their clients or not. An example is Česká spořitelna, which has definitively discontinued the service of setting up deposit books. This financial product has a long tradition in the Czech Republic and is particularly popular with older people. Who else but the largest and most traditional Czech bank should offer them?
However, Česká spořitelna decided otherwise. After all, it has not been setting up classic passbooks for clients since 2013. Until now, it has only kept children’s and winning passbooks. Especially in the second case, it is a rather strange product, where the money does not earn interest in any way, but there is always a draw for one million crowns between the owners twice a year. It’s a kind of strange entanglement between savings and gambling, which doesn’t have much to do in a decent bank. Especially when she is constantly worried about the financial health of her clients.
Although Česká spořitelna talks about the fact that clients are losing interest in passbooks, it also admits that clients have 700,000 of them open. That’s not a low number at all. And who knows, if this product had been given proper care and maybe even some advertising, it might have prospered even more. After all, many people today don’t even know that any passbooks were offered.
There is one more option left
But it’s too late now. At least in the case of Česká spořitelna, which will no longer offer you this product. For existing passbook owners, it will take them further, but the question is for how long. It is quite possible that it will eventually decide to completely cancel and switch to a standard current account offering.

However, those interested in a passbook still have one last option. ČSOB still provides them. And wow, according to this bank, there is still a lot of interest in this product. “Clients of this product particularly appreciate its traditional concept, where the amount of their balance is physically indicated directly in their passbook, i.e. without the need to use internet banking or the ČSOB Smart application.” states the advantages of the bank’s passbook.
