César 2024: “The Animal Kingdom” and “Anatomy of a Fall” at the top of the nominations

The day after the announcement of the Oscar nominations, it’s time for the Césars. This Wednesday, the list unveiled by the Academy placed the fantasy film at the top “The Animal Kingdom” by Thomas Cailley, with 12 nominations. The feature film is ahead “Anatomy of a Fall” by Justine Triet, nominated 11 times and continues its extraordinary journey for French film.

In addition, three directors, including Justine Triet, are nominated in the category of best director, a trophy which has only been won once in history by a woman (Tonie Marshall for “Vénus Beauté” in 2000). . On Tuesday, “Anatomy of a Fall” once again shone internationally by being nominated in five categories at the Oscars, including best film and best direction.

“The Animal Kingdom” in the lead with 12 nominations

“The Animal Kingdom,” a fantasy film set in the near future, where humans have begun to mutate into animal creatures, garnered 12 nominations on Wednesday, notably for “best film,” “best actor” for Romain Duris and “the best achievement”.

“Anatomy of a Fall”, dissection of the balance of power within a couple of artists, which obtained five nominations on Tuesday including “best film” and “best direction” at the Oscars, is just behind, qualified in eleven categories. This performance confirms the success of this 2h32 film, which traces the trial of a woman accused of having killed her husband, with the couple’s visually impaired boy as the only witness, and which has already enabled Justine Triet to become in May the third director in history to win the Palme d’Or at Cannes.

In addition to “best film” and “best actress” for German Sandra Hüller, 45, Justine Triet, also 45, is selected in the “best director” category. This trophy has only been won once in the history of the Césars by a woman, Tonie Marshall, for “Vénus Beauté (institut)” in 2000. “Anatomy of a Fall” also won two Golden Globes at the United States, best international film and best screenplay.

But this year, two other directors are nominated in this category: Catherine Breillat, 75 years old, for “L’Été été”, a story of incest in a bourgeois environment with Léa Drucker (nominated for “best actress”), and Jeanne Herry with “I will always see your faces”, an choral film on justice. They are in competition with two directors, Cédric Kahn (“The Goldman Trial”) and Thomas Cailley.

“Scrapyard dog” creates a surprise

As for “best film”, a first feature film, “Dog from the Scrapyard” by Jean-Baptiste Durand, 38, created a surprise by qualifying. This work, which has seven nominations in total, features Anthony Bajon and a newcomer, Raphaël Quenard, 32 years old. This confirms his unique status: he is not only nominated in the “male revelation” category for this film but also propelled into the “best actor” category for his role in the comedy “Yannick” by Quentin Dupieux. He will be in competition with Benjamin Lavernhe and Melvil Poupaud. As for actresses, Marion Cotillard, Viriginie Efira and Hafsia Herzi are also in the running.

In total, 3,375 members of the Académie des César voted, or 72% of them. They now have one month to choose the winners, before the holding of the ceremony on February 23 at the Olympia, in Paris, chaired by Valérie Lemercier. Honorary Césars will be awarded to actress and director Agnès Jaoui and American-British filmmaker Christopher Nolan (“Oppenheimer”).

The evening will be a baptism of fire for the new Minister of Culture, Rachida Dati. It is often the occasion for political or social demands: Roselyne Bachelot, another former Sarkozyste who became Emmanuel Macron’s Minister of Culture during his first five-year term, never digested the reception that was reserved for her at the Césars in 2021 .

We could expect from the world of cinema, stuffed with public money, in the absence of recognition – let’s not ask for the impossible! – at least a brief and courteous greeting to the representative of the State during this demonstration“, she had scathed in a book reviewing her visit to rue de Valois
