certain vitamins reduce the effectiveness of chemo

Another study that is sure to fuel the debate over the effectiveness of vitamin supplements. Researchers have just published work in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, which shows that certain vitamins reduce the therapeutic effectiveness of chemotherapy in the treatment of breast cancer.

41% more risk of recurrence

To reach such a conclusion, the scientific team monitored the health of 1,134 breast cancer patients. Among them, 20% took vitamins before treatment and 13% during. After about six years, people on supplements before and during chemotherapy were almost twice as likely (41%) to reoffend as others. And their risk of death was also higher during medical follow-up (+ 40%).

The list of vitamins to avoid

The antioxidant nutrients in the vitamins would prevent the treatment from fighting cancer cells. “To combat these, chemotherapy creates a lot of oxidative stress. We believe that antioxidants block oxidative stress and thus make chemotherapy less effective,” said Dr. Christine Ambrosone, author of the study, on the Reuters website. The vitamins that would have the most impact on chemotherapy would be vitamin B12 (83% additional risk of recurrence) as well as vitamins A, C and E. Other dietary supplements on the dock: iron and omega supplements -3.

The study authors advise cancer patients to use the vitamins in the plate rather than the pills. “With a healthy and balanced diet, you can get all the nutrients your body needs, even during chemo,” recalls Christine Ambrosone.
