Cerignola tomorrow morning will ask for the recognition of the state of natural disaster. Mayor Francesco Bonito anticipated this late in the afternoon today following the massive damage caused by the violent downpour to the homes of private citizens, public works and private ones. For the whole day of Monday 9 May all educational activities will be suspended to carry out reconnaissance on school buildings.
A violent storm of water this afternoon hit the city of Cerignola causing enormous inconvenience to traffic, but also and above all flooding and damage. Car broke down along the city streets, the water has reached the windows. “Never so much rain on our city “ said the mayor Francesco Bonito. According to the Civil Defense, 126 mm of rain fell. The last such strong water bomb was recorded in 1952 with 123mm of rain in 24 hours.
The first citizen makes it known that at the moment there is no damage to people, while there are several floods in public and private buildings. “In most of the city the situation is turning to normal, also thanks to the extraordinary maintenance of the white sewers carried out in recent months. I am personally monitoring the situation in all the neighborhoods, I will keep you updated” concludes the mayor.
Areas without electricity and flooded Enel substations. The main criticalities were recorded in the Mercadante area, via Trinitapoli, via Monte Bianco. Enel is taking steps to install three generators to resolve power line outages, including those in Corso Aldo Moro.
The violent downpour caused damage to the turf of the Monterisi stadium. The changing rooms were completely flooded. Someone on Facebook joked: “Cerignola beach”. “I went to see him in Budapest … in Bratislava … Today the Danube came to see me” we read on social media. The rain swept everything away and ripped up manholes.
