Cercle submits new competition formula proposal: 18 cl …

Cercle Brugge again submitted a proposal for a competition formula in 1A. Green-black wants to play football with 18 clubs with mini-play-offs in the next two years. 1B is retained. The plan would enjoy considerable support within the Pro League.

About two months ago, Cercle Brugge also took the lead. Chairman Vincent Goemaere then put the plan on the table to play football in the Jupiler Pro League with 20 teams without play-offs and to abolish the loss-making 1B. The President of the Association is still convinced that this is the ideal formula for our football, but it never came to a vote.

That is why Goemaere adjusted his ideas after consultation. Cercle listened to the top teams and to the K11 and realizes that the lawsuits brought by relegant Waasland-Beveren must be ended. That is why green-black now proposes to play football with 18 teams in 1A – so with Waasland-Beveren, OH Leuven and Beerschot – and also to organize mini-play-offs to satisfy top teams such as Ghent, Genk, Charleroi and Anderlecht. The first four then compete for the title and the Champions League tickets, the numbers 4 to 8 compete for a Europa League ticket. The last in the ranking is relegated directly, the penultimate plays a barrage match against a 1B club

Because 1B would indeed continue to exist. To touch 8 teams there, Lierse Kempenzonen can be added as they have a license and Roeselare is also eligible. Although they did not receive a professional license at Schiervelde, Roeselare can now provide the necessary papers. In 1B it is a normal competition. The two periods have been permanently abolished and the champion will be promoted directly to 1A.

These formulas would be applied for the next two years. In the meantime, there should be a study on how to proceed after that. It remains to be seen whether this proposal will be passed by the General Assembly, but there would be considerable support. With the K11, STVV has already won the idea and some large clubs are not averse to it either.
