Cepsa and Endesa decide to pool their electric car charging network

On December 21, 2021, Cepsa and Endesa announced an alliance whose scope will cover Spain and Portugal. In these two countries, a large network of electric car charging points will be created thanks to this partnership. This is news that could certainly delight users of this model of car in the region in question.

Last July, the European Commission suggested considering banning the sale of cars with thermal engines in 2035. Two months earlier, Spain had adopted a law on energy transition. A text which enshrines the ban on the circulation of private cars emitting carbon emissions by 2050. Regarding their sale, it will be banned within 20 years.

In this context, the energy company Endesa and the gas and oil group Cepsa recently announced a partnership. According to Philippe Boisseau, Chairman and CEO of Cepsa, this is a decisive phase in the energy transition in the Iberian Peninsula.

A union that greatly benefits users of electric mobility

Concretely, the two entities have chosen to pool their electric car charging network in this region in 2022. A merger that will simplify the journeys of users of this type of vehicle. This could therefore encourage other motorists to use it. This would benefit, among other things, car insurance companies.

Thanks to this cooperation, users of the Endesa application will be able to connect to Cepsa terminals. This, in order to recharge their vehicle. Likewise, drivers with the Cepsa application will be able to access the 2,800 of Endesa X (Endesa subsidiary). They will have the opportunity to benefit from all technologies:

  • Semi-rapid;
  • Fast ;
  • Ultra fast.

In a joint statement, the two partners said:

The new ultra-fast charging network that will be deployed by Cepsa (150 kW charging stations located on all highways and main roads) will join the infrastructure of Endesa X […], which currently has 75 ultra-fast charging stations in 25 locations across Spain.

Some details of the project remain unknown

These very high power stations, affirm Cepsa and Endesa, allow users to:

[…] Recharge 80% of the battery of their electric vehicles in about 10 minutes.

For now, details are lacking as to the details of the charging network in preparation, such as:

  • The density of ultra-fast charging stations (HPC);
  • The number of outlets per station;
  • The type of terminal used.

Furthermore, the press release does not provide the total number of charging stations envisaged. Note that these will constitute the most important HPC network in Spain.

Along with the subject, it will be recalled that beyond the Pyrenees, Endesa aims to install 8,500 new public charging points by 2025. With this in mind, the company was granted 35 million euros in 2020 from the European Investment Bank. A sum granted for promote electric mobility in Spain.
