Cosmax announced on the 27th that officials from the Korean Intellectual Property Office, including Jwa Seung-gwan, Acting Director of the Chemical and Biological Examination Bureau of the Korean Intellectual Property Office, visited the Pangyo R&I (Research & Innovation) Center in Seongnam-si, Gyeonggi-do on the 26th.
The Korean Intellectual Property Office is cooperating with the industry by visiting companies with the highest number of patent applications in various industries this year. Cosmax also ranks first in the number of patent applications in the cosmetics ODM industry, with the cumulative number of patent applications exceeding 1,600 as of the third quarter of this year. The number of registered patents is also the highest in the industry, at over 650.
The Korean Intellectual Property Office plans to support the global competitiveness of the domestic cosmetics industry through this visit. In particular, we listened to opinions needed to revise patent examination standards to help spread K-beauty around the world.
Cosmax and the Korean Intellectual Property Office also held a joint seminar in the field of cosmetic materials during this meeting. The Korean Intellectual Property Office conveyed international trends in patent applications for hyaluronic acid, which is used as a main ingredient in cosmetics, and various hair loss cosmetic raw materials.
Cosmax presented its material patent trends and applied technologies. Cosmax is focusing on securing patented technologies centered around its R&I center with 1,000 researchers around the world. In 2023, the number of annual registered patents at home and abroad reached 100, and we plan to secure a similar level of patents by the end of this year.
Recently, Cosmax has been working to strengthen its patented UV protection technology. Over the past five years, more than 60 cases, or more than 10% of Cosmax’s total patent applications (about 580 cases), are related to UV protection technology.
In addition, we are focusing on expanding research in the microbiome field. Cosmax first began research in the microbiome field in 2011. Since then, about 80 patents related to microbial resources have been registered.
Jwa Seung-gwan, Acting Director of the Chemical and Life Review Bureau, said, “The basis of a company’s intellectual property strategy is to secure a variety of intellectual property rights in preparation for future uncertainties and to possess competitive ‘strong patents.’” He added, “In the future, not only cosmetics, but also microorganisms and cosmetics “If we rights various research and development achievements, such as containers, through strong patents, we will be able to further advance as a leading company in the global cosmetics industry,” he said.
Park Cheon-ho, head of Cosmax R&I unit, said, “Cosmax introduces over 8,000 innovative products to the global cosmetics market every year,” and added, “We will raise the technological status of K-beauty in the global market by continuously securing patented technologies.”
