CEO Tony Fernandes Defends Controversial Shirtless Massage Photo during Meeting

Jakarta

AirAsia CEO Tony Fernandes once caused a stir when he was photographed bare-chested and being massaged in the middle of a meeting. Now, he has revealed again about the controversial action.

The Malaysian businessman does not regret his actions, even though they attracted controversy. He realizes that his attitude of being too open on social media doesn’t always end well.

“I am transparent and social media allows me to be very transparent. There is a downside, the public will misinterpret and misunderstand the figure of Tony Fernandes,” he said as quoted by CNBCTuesday (12/3/2024).

Tony said the photo was not a setup. The photo was actually taken during a meeting.

Tony said that his massage and shirtlessness were done with the approval of the staff who attended the meeting with him. He considered postponing the meeting until he finished the massage.

“Initially, I asked if we could postpone the meeting so I could get a massage, I was so sore from flying so much. But, the team said it was okay so we chose not to postpone it. So I actually posted to say, what an amazing culture we have ,” said Tony.

By Tony, the photo was displayed on his personal LinkedIn in October 2023. “I have to love Indonesian culture and AirAsia so that I can get massages and have management meetings,” is the caption in the photo.

Tony continued his story about the photo.

“Do I regret it? No. Gave me a lot of publicity,” Tony said.

“You can’t have a diverse airline like us, our top management is mostly women. We have a culture that is equal, fun, transparent and direct,” said Tony.
