CEO does not want to impose morality on players

A YouTube comment supposedly written by Saber Interactive CEO Matthew Karch speaks out against the over-moralization of video games.

In a recently published Reaction video American YouTuber Asmongold TV praises Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, released by Saber Interactive in early September, for its classic approach without trying to please everyone.

Below the video you can find the following comment from a user who is supposedly Saber Interactive CEO Matthew Karch:

“Hey man. CEO of Saber here. I love your videos. When we signed the deal for Space Marine 2, all I wanted was a throwback game. We had the chance to work on something that was old school in nature. A lot of the current games we play today I can’t even relate to. They are too complex and require too much investment. We worked on Halo back then and that game was boiled down to the simplest of shooting loops, but it was absolutely addictive. That’s what we wanted to recapture.”

“I hope that games like Space Marine 2 and Wukong are the beginning of a return to a time when games were simply about fun and immersion. I spent some time as Chief Operating Officer at Embracer and saw games that made me cry with their over-the-top attempts to convey a message or impose a moral on players. We just want to get some glory kills and get the pulse racing a little. That’s what games should be about to me.”

Whether Matthew Karch is actually the author of the comment, which has now been given more than 20,000 thumbs up, has not yet been confirmed or denied by Karch himself or by Saber Interactive.

A LinkedIn-Posting However, Karch’s comment suggests that the YouTube comment may actually have been written by him, or that he at least agrees with the content. In response to a post with the original comment, Karch replies, “Whoever wrote this seems pretty smart.”

In another comment under the YouTube video, a user, who is said to be Creative Director Oliver Hollis-Leick, thanks the content creator for what he considers to be very apt statements:

“Creative Director of the game here. I wrote Space Marine 2 with Craig Sherman, Randy Begel and Matthew Garcia-Dunn. Everything you have to say about the story and characters is perfectly in line with our actual approach.”

“It’s great to hear you point out the things we consciously focused on. It’s been four and a half years of intense work and passion, and watching videos like this makes it all worth it.”
