In an object moving in a circle there are forces that are related to each other, namely the centripetal force and centrifugal force. If centripetal force is a force with a direction towards the center of the circle, then what is centrifugal force?

Simply put, centrifugal force is a force that is opposite to the centripetal force, as quoted from the Physics Module Package C SMA/MA compiled by Marga Surya (2017).

The module also states that the centrifugal force cannot be greater than the centripetal force. Why? This is because if the centrifugal force is greater, an object moving in a circle can bounce off the circular path.

Definition of Centrifugal Force

Characteristics of Centrifugal Force

From the definition and examples of centrifugal force, the following are the characteristics of centrifugal force that you need to know:

– Centrifugal is a fictitious force, has a pseudo effect, therefore it is called a pseudo force or imaginary force

– The direction of the centrifugal force is moving away from the center of the circular path

– The magnitude of the motion must be equal to the centripetal force, otherwise it can cause objects or objects to bounce off the track

– Cannot be observed with inertial frame observations

– However, by observing the non-inertial framework it can be observed

Example of Centrifugal Force

Examples of centrifugal force that are easily found in everyday life, for example, a merry-go-round in a park. Where the resulting rotating force tends to throw objects outwards.

In addition, the planet’s orbit, although we don’t see it directly, the planet revolves around the sun and maintains a motion that doesn’t approach the center or inward. In this case, the centrifugal force means that it plays an important role in maintaining the trajectory of the planet’s orbit.
