Central Ohioans Advised to Wear Special Glasses for Upcoming Solar Eclipse

On April 8, Central Ohioans will have a rare opportunity to witness a solar eclipse, an event that hasn’t occurred in the area for the past 200 years. However, before gazing up at the sky, residents are being advised to take precautions and wear special glasses specifically designed for this celestial phenomenon. The eclipse is expected to be visible within a 124-mile band that will run through various parts of Ohio, including the greater Columbus area, around 3:15 p.m. that day.

NASA has issued a warning against looking directly at the sun during the eclipse, as it can cause severe eye injury. To ensure the safety of viewers, the space agency recommends obtaining a pair of eclipse glasses that meet the “SO 12312-2 international standard” for direct sun viewing. However, finding authentic glasses can be challenging due to the prevalence of counterfeit products flooding the market in the past.

To address this concern, the American Astronomical Society has compiled a list of approved vendors for eclipse glasses and telescopes. Local retail stores such as Kroger, Meijer, and Walmart are expected to sell these specialized glasses as the eclipse approaches. Additionally, the Columbus Metropolitan Library will be distributing free solar eclipse glasses starting from March 18. Interested individuals can obtain up to four pairs per family by visiting any of the library’s 23 locations. To ensure availability, it is advisable to call ahead and check with the library system.

For those looking for a convenient option, COSI in downtown Columbus is selling packs of solar eclipse glasses on their website. The museum offers various bundles, ranging from 30 pairs for $75 to 1,000 pairs for $2,500. This allows families, groups, or even educational institutions to acquire the necessary eyewear for a safe and memorable viewing experience.

As anticipation builds for this rare celestial event, it is essential for Central Ohioans to prioritize their eye safety. By obtaining approved eclipse glasses from reliable sources, residents can enjoy the awe-inspiring beauty of the solar eclipse without risking their vision. Remember, the next opportunity to witness such an event in Ohio may not come for another two centuries. So mark your calendars, secure your glasses, and prepare for a breathtaking display in the skies above.
