Central Córdoba eliminated Newell’s on penalties and moved on to the quarterfinals of the Argentine Cup: this is how the table ended

The best moments of Newell’s-Central Córdoba in the Argentine Cup

Central Córdoba de Santiago del Estero defeated Newell’s on penalties (3-2) and qualified for the quarterfinals of the Argentine Cup. After the goalless draw, the match was decided from the twelve steps: it was a match with few emotions played at the Estadio Único de San Nicolás and the tension came in the resolution. El Ferroviario will next face Temperley, the Primera Nacional team that left River Plate behind in the round of 32.

In a tense match that lacked risky plays, both teams bored the fans who came to the stadium in the north of Buenos Aires. Expectations were not high with Lepra in 22nd place in the Professional League and Ferroviario at the bottom of the table.

The Rosario team did not show the depth to be able to defeat the Santiago team, which also put more effort than ideas. Only 6 shots on goal, 10 corner kicks and 37 fouls were the x-ray of a match in which as the minutes passed, the penalty shootout became an increasingly firm chance.

There was no difference in the 90 minutes and the match had to be settled with a five-shot shootout. In these one-on-one matches, Central Córdoba’s goalkeeper, Luis Ingolotti, stopped both shots (Gabriel Carabajal and Gustavo Velázquez) at the same place, down on the right, and became the star of the team from Santiago, as his effort was worth advancing to the next round. There was also a missed shot by Matko Miljevic. On the side of the team from Santiago, Lucas Varaldo and Rodrigo Atencio, broke the crossbars.

This classification is an incentive for Central Córdoba since, as indicated, it is in last place in the Professional League, where after eleven rounds it lost eight matches, tied two and won only one. For the 12th round, Ferroviario will face Temperley in the quarterfinals. The team from the Primera Nacional is currently eleventh in Zone B. It will receive Banfield on Monday at 4:00 p.m. in one of the matches that will close the activity. Meanwhile, Newell’s will visit River Plate on Sunday at 8:30 p.m.

The quarter-finals were completed on one side, as Central Córdoba-Temperley is joined by Huracán-Talleres de Remedios de Escalada. On the other side, the only confirmed match is Vélez, who are waiting for the winner of Independiente-Godoy Cruz. Meanwhile, Boca Juniors-Talleres de Córdoba and Barracas Central-Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata will define the other key.

It is worth remembering that the champion of this tournament, in addition to adding a star at the national level, will earn a place in the next Copa Libertadores de América.
