Moderate heating back to power in the capital as geothermal energy is not effective for now. This resource is used for production electricity and thermal, then distributed in networks. Its use is still limited compared to its great potential.
Central heating is back
Claudiu Creţu, general manager Bucharest power plant warns those with central heating systems that central heating is back in power in the capital as Bucharest residents cannot heat themselves with geothermal energy at this time
Claudiu Creţu explained at the event “Profit Energy.forum”, if in the last ten years the centralized system was seen as a sign of the past, now, thanks to European trends and gas discoveries from Black Seareturned as the Capital’s leading sustainable heating solution.
In the years 2017-2019, there were many so-called experts who called for the end of the centralized system. Claudiu Creţu: “I then asked a simple question: How do we heat Bucharest? Of the nearly 1,000 gigacalories we need in winter, just for moderate. It is very easy to talk about desires, hydrogen, and others”.

The war in Ukraine woke us up to reality
Claudiu Creţu also says “The fact is that more than half of the main energy is spent in heating and cooling. And gas is a very big part. And we can’t talk about gas because it’s polluting, while there are stoves in Bucharest that burn everything, furniture, plastic, even in the center of Bucharest”.
IN his opinion, “the war in Ukraine woke us up to the truth, that is, we understood the value of gas and what it means for Romania to have its own gas reserves. And today we have made a positive move. We have projects to develop new gas plants, and these will bring balance to the energy system.”
The expert also mentioned Neptun Deep, with gas reserves that will ensure us for 30 years. We have that peace of mind that we can heat Romanian houses and that we can look more calmly at new technologies, heat pumps, geothermal energy”.
Geothermal heating, enough for Bucharest
Regarding geothermal energy, he says that it cannot be done from one year to the next, there is a project, but even if it is implemented, it is not enough for the capital, says a director General Electrocentrale Bucharest.
We already have a study to introduce geothermal energy, but it is more difficult because the projects must be well thought out. Then, says the expert, the change will be partially geothermal. If there was a geothermal reserve one or two hundred below Bucharest, we might fully account for it, but when we are talking about 50-60 degrees, obviously gas is also needed. Therefore, the solution for the future is to integrate gas with other technologies and the most profitable will win”.
