Central America is preparing for rare severe hurricane Eta | NOW

People in northern Nicaragua and southern Honduras are preparing for a powerful tropical storm. Hurricane Eta is hurtling with gusts of wind at 150 miles per hour on the coast of Central America, where it will arrive Dutch time on Tuesday morning. It is rare for an Atlantic storm to develop so vigorously in November.

On Tuesday morning Dutch time, Eta will come ashore in the north of Nicaragua and then divert to Honduras. The hurricane has developed into one of this year’s worst Atlantic storms.

According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC) in Miami, US, the hurricane is expected to cause life-threatening tidal waves, floods and landslides if it hits the coast of Nicaragua on Tuesday morning. As much as 64 cm of rain could fall through Eta.

The NHC also warns of catastrophic winds and floods in Honduras. The center also points out that Jamaica, El Salvador, the Cayman Islands, southeastern Mexico and southern Haiti are threatening flash floods.

More than 3,000 households have been evacuated in the northeastern region of the country, according to Nicaraguan authorities. The government already sent food to the area on Sunday and auxiliary troops to help restore the infrastructure after the storm.

It’s rare for an Atlantic storm to reach this strength in November, according to a Colorado State University researcher. Until now, the Atlantic storms this year have not been as severe as in other seasons.

It is the 28th storm in the Atlantic Ocean in 2020, which is almost a record number. Only in 2005 there were as many storms.
