Health authorities in the United States are warning of a serious shortage of the vaccines needed to combat the growing outbreak of monkeypox. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has confirmed more than 1,800 cases of the viral illness since it was first detected in the US in May, though severe shortages of diagnostic tests may real number of cases is much higher. More than 1.5 million US residents qualify for a vaccine, but the Biden administration has so far released just over 130,000 doses that are part of a national stockpile. Meanwhile, Forbes magazine reports that logistical, bureaucratic, and technical errors have delayed the distribution of nearly seven million additional doses, which could take months to become available. Monkeypox is not fatal, but it can cause fever, rashes, and extremely painful lesions. Most of the time it spreads through close and intimate physical contact. So far, cases of monkeypox in the US have disproportionately affected men who have sex with men, although anyone can get the disease.
