The countries abroad with which Greek voters identify most, in relation to their domestic party preference, are recorded by a Good Affairs poll published by “To Vima”. The general picture that emerges from the poll data shows that the voters who in the European elections are oriented towards voting for parties of the wider political center (New Democracy, a “New centrist party”, PaSoK and an “Ecological party”) consider with a very large difference that the interests of our country are more closely aligned with those of the countries of the western world (France, Germany, Great Britain).
Indeed, among these countries, France is by far the second most popular answer, ranging from 62% of New Democracy voters to 46% of those of a possible “Environmental Party”. New Left voters are on the same wavelength, with 49% choosing France as the answer, while only 37% chose Russia.
The “Russophilia” of the extremes
On the contrary, it appears that at both political extremes, for different reasons of course and with different intensity, there is a much larger percentage of voters who consider that the interests of our country are identical with those of Russia. The largest percentage is recorded among the voters of MeRA25, with 72% identifying with Russia, while the percentages of Russia are also very high among the voters of Plefsis Eleftherias (57%), Hellenic Solution (55%) and the KKE (54%). “New party with patriotic principles” and Spartans follow with 48% and 47% respectively. The exception is the voters of Niki, as it is the only party to the right of ND whose voters identify more with France than with Russia (45% versus 41%).
Particularly impressive are the results among SYRIZA voters: Although overall Western countries outnumber Russia, Russia is the most popular answer individually with 43%, followed by France with 40%.
France the most popular choice
Regarding the individual countries of the Western world, France remains more popular overall. The answers Yes or Probably yes to the question about the identification of its interests with those of Greece range from 71% among New Democracy voters to 10% of those of MeRA25.
The answers regarding the identification of the interests of Greece – Germany, on the other hand, are much less, as the best performance is recorded among the voters of an “Environmental party” (23%), while a little behind is that among the voters of the ND (20%). It is recalled that among the countries listed, Germany is the only one in whose government an ecological party participates.
The picture for Great Britain is similar: the largest percentage recorded is that among the voters of the New Republic, but this, like for Germany, is quite small (14%). The lowest percentage of identification is recorded between the voters of the KKE and the Hellenic Solution (4%).
On the other hand, regarding Russia, Yes or Probably Yes responses to the question about identifying interests with those of Greece range from 53% among Spartan voters to a meager 10% among New Democracy voters. It follows logically that the two poles of identification between Greek voters are France and Russia. On the one hand, the voters of the parties with a more pro-European character, regardless of whether they come from the Center-Right or the Center-Left, consider that Greek interests are more aligned with French ones. Conversely, voters of parties with strong anti-EU credentials look east, specifically to Moscow.
