Centeno ends the taboo on re-running the Eurogroup leadership on Thursday – Observer

The president of the Eurogroup, Mário Centeno, announces next Thursday whether or not he is a candidate for a new mandate at the head of the informal forum of finance ministers in the euro zone, his spokesman confirmed this Monday to Lusa.

The announcement will be made at the Eurogroup meeting scheduled for June 11, which will once again be celebrated by videoconference, with the Portuguese Minister of Finance informing his counterparts if he is a candidate for a new two and a half year term or if he is out of the race, indicated his spokesman.

About a month before the end of his term – July 13 -, Centeno will finally end the taboo around a possible re-election, in an announcement that is awaited with great expectation in Portugal, but also in Europe, since other potential candidates for the post have been waiting for the decision of the Portuguese minister to decide whether to proceed with candidacies for the presidency of the Eurogroup, held by the Portuguese Minister of Finance since January 2018.

A month ago, the German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung said that Centeno had decided not to run for a second term as leader of the Eurogroup, but the Minister of Finance has been reluctant to reveal his decision, which he will then communicate on Thursday. late at the meeting of the eurozone finance ministers, the penultimate before the election, which is expected to be held at the July meeting.

Elected in December 2017, Mário Centeno succeeded the Dutchman Jeroen Dijsselbloem as president of the Eurogroup in January 2018, for a term of two and a half years, which expires in July.
