We are 431,443 Euréliens, 132 fewer than last year! The latest data from the INSEE (National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies) census show a relative stability of the population in the Eure-et-Loir.
Municipality by municipality, discover the latest census data:
1. A slightly declining population
Eure-et-Loir, which had gained inhabitants between 2009 and 2014 (+0.4%), is no longer so dynamic from a demographic point of view. According to INSEE, the department saw its population decrease slightly between 2014 and 2020 (-0.1%).
If the department is losing inhabitants, it is mainly due to a negative migratory balance (-0.3% between 2014 and 2020). Clear, more people leave the department each year than settle there.
On the other hand, the number of births is higher than the number of deaths (+0.2%). This slight natural surplus partly offsets the net migration deficit between 2014 and 2020 and helps limit population decline.
2. An increasingly marked peri-urbanisation
Between 2014 and 2020 the population decreased in the four district capitals. This decline is very low in Chartres (-0.1%) and Dreux (-0.2%). Châteaudun drops below 13,000 inhabitants (-0.4%), while Nogent-le-Rotrou remains below the threshold of 10,000 inhabitants (-1.2%).
“Population continues to grow in the suburbs of big cities”explain Thibault Tillard and Florine Verdu, authors of the study on the Insee Center-Val de Loire census.
Do you live in one of the 68 communes of Eure-et-Loir in the 2020 census?
This phenomenon is particularly marked in the urban area of Chartreswhere many communes are gaining inhabitants, such as Fontenay-sur-Eure (+4.5%), Morancez (+2%), Mignières (+2.2%) or Gellainville (+1.5%).
Same thing around Dreux, in Saulnières (+3.4%), Aunay-sous-Crécy (+3%), Germainville (+2.5%).
3. The most dynamic margins of Ile-de-France
Driven by the proximity of Paris, some municipalities on the edge of Ile-de-France continue to experience demographic dynamism, even if not all benefit from it. Auneau-Bleury-Saint-Symphorien thus gains inhabitants (+2%), as do Soulaires (+1.3%), Maintenon (+0.8%) and the other communes which have a station on the SNCF Paris-Chartres.
4. The east and the south are depopulated
Most of the communes located in the east and south of the department continue to lose inhabitants, between 2014 and 2020, with a few exceptions in Perche and around Châteaudun.
