Mexico City. Given the new versions about the disappearance of Salvador Rangel Mendoza, bishop emeritus of the Chilpancingo-Chilapa diocese, the Conference of the Mexican Episcopate (CEM) “respectfully asked that conjectures and speculations that unnecessarily rarify the case be avoided, taking into account the human dignity” and ruled out pointing out what happened as a kidnapping, but rather as a “temporary disappearance.”
The state security commissioner of Morelos, José Antonio Ortiz Guarneros, said today that there are no elements to consider that the prelate’s absence was due to a kidnapping, since he would have “voluntarily” entered a hotel, along with a man, who he later retired.
Ramón Castro, general secretary of the CEM, specified that “as soon as he has the required health conditions, Bishop Salvador Rangel himself will give his statement and inform in a timely manner” about what really happened.
The CEM stated that “first of all we thank God because Monsignor Salvador Rangel Mendoza (who is 78 years old) was found alive.”
“We also want to thank the genuine concern of different people, groups and institutions, about the temporary disappearance and now about the state of health” of the cardinal.
He specified that “as a church we trust the institutions and that leads us to leave the corresponding investigation in the hands of the authorities.”
