Celtics co-owners invest in Atalanta

BERGAMO, Italy (AP) — A group of investors led by the co-owner of the Boston Celtics has bought Atalanta, an Italian club that has put up a fight against the Italian greats in recent years.

Stephen Pagliuca heads the group that acquired 55% of the company’s shares from the Percassi family, which owned 86% of the Serie A team.

The Percassi, through the La Dea Srl group, will continue to be the largest shareholders, Atalanta said. Antonio Percassi will continue to be president of the club, while his son Luca will continue as general manager.

Pagliuca will take over as co-chair of the council.

Atalanta have finished third in each of the last three seasons. In 2020, they reached the quarterfinals in the lucrative Champions League.

“Atalanta and the Boston Celtics share the same sports values, team spirit and a unique bond with their fans and communities,” Pagliuca said in a statement.

“We believe that the Percassi family has built very solid foundations on which we can work together for a global strengthening of the brand, with the aim of encouraging further diversification and revenue growth, allowing the club to become increasingly competitive. on the Italian and international scale”.

Atalanta is currently in fifth position in Serie A.
