Celtic players and fans applaud Charlie Gallagher after the funeral of the Lisbon Lion – EzAnime.net

amily, soccer fans and players gathered to applaud Charlie Gallagher outside Celtic Park after the Lisbon Lion’s funeral.

The forward was one of the stars of 1967 when the Glasgow club lifted the European Cup, although he was an unused substitute in the last match.

He died at age 80 on July 11, and the funeral took place on Wednesday at St Dominic’s Roman Catholic Church in Bishopbriggs, near Glasgow, near where he lived.

Among those attending the service, which took place under coronavirus restrictions, were new Celtic CEO Dominic McKay and Neil Lennon, who both played for the club before directing them twice.

Jim McCalliog was out of church as well, and although the former Scotland and Manchester United striker never played with Gallagher, they both attended Holyrood High School in Glasgow.

Gallagher was born in Scotland but represented the Republic of Ireland internationally.

Flowers were left outside the church, with a message on a Celtic reading wreath: “Rest in peace, Charlie. You will never Walk alone. From everyone at Celtic Football Club «.

Another said, “RIP Charlie from Brian, Louise, Gina and Orla, James, Daniel and Walter.”

After the service, the funeral procession traveled to Celtic Park, where around 100 people had gathered, including club staff and fans.

The club’s new captain, Callum McGregor, joined fellow Scottish internationals David Turnbull and Greg Taylor to lead the applause as the hearse pulled up in front of the stadium’s main entrance.

Screens inside the stadium also paid tribute to Gallagher, who is leaving behind his wife Mary Rose and their three children.

After leaving Celtic Park, the hearse traveled to Daldowie crematorium on the eastern edge of Glasgow.
