Construction is set to begin in the next few months on the Celtic Interconnector, a €1.6 billion electricity interconnector between Ireland and France that will increase energy security, lower prices for Irish consumers, and create a new market for Irish electricity producers. The interconnector, which will run from Youghal in County Cork to Brittany, will allow Irish energy producers to sell electricity to France, as well as buy energy from French suppliers. The project has secured funding and passed through the planning process, and EirGrid CEO Mark Foley expects it to be producing electricity by 2026. The interconnector is a flagship project in terms of European connectivity and will play a pivotal role in the Irish State’s energy production plans.
