Celtic 9-0 Dundee United – Ghirls put on a show on Paradise Flag Day

Never in doubt as nine goals see the Ghirls victorious on the opening day of the Scottish Women’s Premier League.

Celtic FC Women 9-0 Dundee United

The supporters at Paradise got to watch as the girls raised the flag for the first time in history, before an utterly dominating performance against Dundee United.

We kept possession early into the game, with Jenny Smith and Lucy Ashworth-Clifford particularly catching the eye. The former almost got us off to an instant flyer as Amy Gallacher delivered a killer ball to her, but it was just out of her reach.

That wouldn’t matter for long though as with 25 minutes on the clock, LAC made up for it as she opened the scoring with a stunner. She struck the ball and it flew into the top corner with perfect precision. What a goal for the first of the new campaign!

New signing Saoirse Noonan grabbed the second just three minutes later. Some great teamwork saw us work the ball to Colette Cavanagh on the edge of the area. The midfielder kept the ball well, beating a player before sending a delivery in. The pass found the Noonan, who made no mistake in converting with a header.

Mathilde Carstens worked space well as the Celts searched for a third but she had her effort tipped over the bar. But just on the brink of half time, Jenny Smith did find the third of the afternoon as she got her name on the scoresheet. She struck it from inside of the area and her perfect shot found the bottom corner of the net.

The second half got underway and just five minutes in, we got off to the perfect start. Defender Bruna Lourenço scored a fantastic goal from range as her superb strike was placed in the top corner.

Amy Gallacher was the next to score as she got off the mark for the new campaign. A fantastic cross found her in the box and, of course, she made no mistake in hitting it home.

Noonan secured her brace as she hit it from a corner. Her attempt hit the underside of the bar and found its way into the net for Celtic’s sixth of the afternoon.

And the goals kept coming as Signe Carstens, after a fantastic performance, managed to get her name on the scoresheet. She found the bottom corner as she hit it from outside of the box – potentially a goal-of-the-month contender on day one!

Substitutions after the hour mark saw LAC, Noonan, Carstens and Gallacher make way for Shannon McGregor, Maria McAneny, Hana Kerner and Murphy Agnew. It was great to see Kerner back in action, and she looked amazing.

And she wasn’t the only one that caught the eye as McAneny rounded off the afternoon with two perfect goals.

A cross from Luana Munoz, also making her return to competitive action, found her in front of the goal for her first. And for her second, she controlled it well and finished a brilliantly worked move with a goal to make it 9-0 to the Scottish champions!

What a brilliant game at Paradise!
