Optimistic Céline Dion Shares Candid Insights on Her Battle with Stiff Person Syndrome
Recovery, Outlook, and Self-Blame
When Céline Dion, the iconic music sensation, revealed in December 2022 that she had been diagnosed with Stiff Person Syndrome, her fans were left in dismay as her European tours got canceled. Nearly a year and a half later, Dion opened up about her arduous recovery journey, her optimistic outlook on life, and why she initially blamed herself for her diagnosis.
Dion, 56, explained to Vogue France, “I haven’t beat the disease, as it’s still within me and always will be. I hope that we’ll find a miracle, a way to cure it with scientific research, but for now, I have to learn to live with it. So that’s me, now with Stiff Person Syndrome.”
A Tough Path to Recovery
Dion’s battle against Stiff Person Syndrome requires rigorous effort. She dedicates five days a week to athletic, physical, and vocal therapy, working on various aspects of her body and singing abilities. Over time, she has learned to live with her condition and stop questioning herself. She admitted that initially, she would wonder, “Why me? How did this happen? What have I done? Is this my fault?”
However, Dion emphasized that life does not always provide answers, and one must learn to accept it. She stated, “You just have to live it! I have this illness for some unknown reason. The way I see it, I have two choices. Either I train like an athlete and work super hard, or I switch off and it’s over, I stay at home, listen to my songs, stand in front of my mirror, and sing to myself.”
Uncertainty Surrounding Stage Return
Despite her remarkable resiliency, Dion cannot provide a definite answer about her return to the stage. The singing sensation remains uncertain about her ability to perform or tour again. “As things stand, I can’t stand here and say to you: ‘Yes, in four months.’ I don’t know,” Dion candidly affirmed.
Adding to her struggles, Dion mentioned the moral difficulties of living day to day while waiting for answers. Nonetheless, she remains determined and determined to pursue her dreams, stating, “It’s the passion. It’s the dream. It’s determination.”
A Sincere Appreciation for Support
Amid her difficult journey, Dion finds solace in the support of her family, fans, and her team. She recognizes the privilege of having access to good doctors and treatments, acknowledging that many individuals suffering from Stiff Person Syndrome are not as fortunate. Dion expressed her gratitude, stating, “People who suffer from SPS may not be lucky enough or have the means to have good doctors and good treatments. I have those means, and this is a gift. What’s more, I have this strength within me. I know that nothing is going to stop me.”
