Jakarta –
Singer Celine Dion has decided to cancel all world concert tour dates for 2023 and 2024. In her announcement, she brought up the rare nervous disorder stiff person syndrome.
The 55-year-old singer said he was very sorry to have disappointed fans by continuing to postpone the concert. But he says he will not succumb to his illness and is rebuilding his strength to make a comeback.
“Even though it breaks my heart, we’d better cancel everything now until I’m really ready to get back on stage again. I want you all to know, I won’t give up and I can’t wait to see you again!,” he wrote on his Instagram account.
The ‘My Heart Will Go On’ singer first revealed her diagnosis in December 2022. Her condition left her with painful muscle spasms and stiffness that got worse over time.
Quoted from Johns Hopkins Medicine, Stiff person syndrome like that of Celine Dion is a rare autoimmune neurological disorder that most often causes muscle rigidity and painful spasms that come and go but can get worse over time.
However, some people experience other symptoms such as unsteady walking, double vision, or slurred speech.
Over time, Stiff-Person Syndrome can cause changes in body posture. In severe cases it can limit a person’s ability to walk or move. If it has happened, sufferers need to undergo continuous treatment for years to manage symptoms and maintain quality of life.
This disease, called stiff person syndrome, is more likely to be seen in people with certain types of the disease, including:
- Autoimmune disorders including diabetes, thyroiditis, vitiligo and pernicious anemia.
- Certain cancers include breast, lung, kidney, thyroid, colon and Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
