The first season of Celebrity Masterchef Flanders is only over, and there is already number two. As long as that doesn’t cause indigestion.

On Play4

It seemed like an excuse, the first sentence spoken in the cooking program Celebrity Masterchef Vlaanderen. “Linde Merckpoel’s ‘victory dish’ is not yet cold,” said a voice-over in authentic Flenglish, “but here we are again with a new season.”

For example, Play4 seemed to admit that it is quite fast. The first season, which Merckpoel won, dates back to the autumn. But it was a success. The viewing figures – and the income from all that (incorrect) product placement – have the effect of a bag of chips on the bosses of Play4: they continue to binge, even though they know that it has actually been enough.

So another can of BVs is opened to cross the soup spoons with each other. Well-known BVs such as Fatma Taspinar or Olga Leyers, who take the game far too seriously and have emerged as real strivers. Or the more relaxed BVs, such as actors Titus De Voogdt and Liesa Naert, who can cook quite a bit. And if we drank a shot every time Jan Van Looveren said that he “used to have a bakery”, we wouldn’t be standing up after every episode.

Also present are some lesser-known Flemish people, such as hockey player Thomas Briels. “I have more stress here than in any Olympic stadium,” he said. We sincerely hope for the man’s career that that was hyperbole.

In the first season the BVs already turned out to be the weak point. We would much rather have seen unknown, passionate hobby chefs at work. But if cooking programs can no longer escape that annoying BV-ization, then make something fun out of it.

In that respect, it is a shame that Gunter Lamoot hung up his apron in episode 2. “I’m participating because otherwise I would just sit at home,” he said at the beginning. That nice perspective will be missed. It is now up to the flamboyant Dutchman Daan Alferink to take over the comic baton. He does that well: what a hilarious character that boy is. How he gagged when he saw a raw catfish: comedy gold. Fortunately, he won the third episode, so he will stay in the competition for a while. Even though he can’t cook for a meter, it says something about how seriously we have to take all of this.

The presence of Nick Bril in the jury feels a bit strange. He is under investigation because he drunkenly hit a kitchen assistant in the parking lot of his restaurant The Jane. We understand that the recordings date from before, but it is still difficult to forget when you see him in action.

This mainly comes down to constantly shouting that time is almost up, and urging BVs to add so much salt to their dishes that our kidneys fail just by watching TV. That will be a nasty thirst.
