Celebrities celebrated the fashion party of the year with a tribute to the late king of couture Karl Lagerfeld, showcasing a series of spectacular designs from his illustrious career on the Met Gala red carpet.
Oscar winners Penelope Cruz and Nicole Kidman, singers Dua Lipa and Rita Ora, tennis legend Roger Federer, as well as supermodels Gisele Bundchen and Kate Moss were just a few of the hundreds invited to the Metropolitan Museum of Art for this glamorous event.
The guest list, which brings together the elite of fashion, film, politics and sports – along with a growing number of internet influencers – is carefully curated by Anna Wintour, editor-in-chief of ‘Vogue’ magazine, who took over the charity gala in the 1990s and turned it into the most coveted social event.
This year, the party, which is always held on the first Monday of May -except in the years of the pandemic-, was inaugurated as a preamble with an exhibition by the Costume Institute dedicated to the emblematic designer Karl Lagerfeld, deceased in 2019.
‘Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty (Karl Lagerfeld, a beauty line)’ aims to pay tribute to his years in the industry at the helm of Chanel, Fendi, Chloe and his own label, while chiseling the future of fashion.
The stars of the gala wore period designs by the elegant German couturier, known for his black suits, white ponytail, everlasting dark glasses and black mittens.
Kidman wore a pink Chanel gown that fell to the floor in a cascade of feathers and which the actress first donned in an ad for the iconic perfume brand nearly 20 years ago.
The controversial Lagerfeld
Singer Dua Lipa appeared in a cream wedding dress designed by Lagerfeld for Chanel in the 1990s, punctuated with black stitching and topped with a stunning Tiffany diamond necklace.
Actress Olivia Wilde donned another iconic piece, a Chloe ‘violin’ dress designed by Lagerfeld in the 1980s. Nearly everyone in attendance turned out in black, white and cream. Structured bras were definitely on trend.
You can only attend by invitation and previous payment of 50,000 dollars
Lagerfeld is not without controversy. Despite his permanent struggle against the scales, he was critical of curvy women. In the last years of his life, he scorned the #MeToo movement and those who dared to come forward as victims of sexual harassment.
Carla Bruni, ex-model, singer and ex-first lady of France was at the presentation to the press of the exhibition on the couturier. “It is an honor to be here to celebrate the extraordinary career of my dear friend,” she told AFP. In addition to his “immense talent”, “creative power” and “captivating charm”, Bruni highlighted his “kindness” above all else.
Attendance at the dance is by invitation only and a prepayment of $50,000, and a table reservation costs $300,000. The proceeds from the gala finance the Costume Institute.
