Budapest marks 150 years since the union of Buda, Pest and Ubud. The union took place in 1873 and symbolized the birth of the metropolis: Budapest. In the past, cities surrounded themselves with walls to protect their values; Today, Budapest is building bridges for a more open atmosphere – as is also symbolized by the renovation of the ‘Chain Bridge’ over the Danube to mark the 150th anniversary of the unification. A number of interesting cultural programs await visitors, as well as many recently opened museums and halls that help and give the city new energy and preserve the cultural freshness of the residents and those who choose to visit the city at this special time.
The birthday is also celebrated in a variety of cultural events:
- The subway museum presents a new exhibition on the history of public transportation in the capital. The exhibition presents the most important events in the history of transportation, the innovation of transportation, the spread of personal transportation, and the most significant types of vehicles. The 150 years are symbolically represented by 150 items. The exhibition until August 31, 2023. Deák Ferenc tér.
- The INOTA Audio Visual Festival does not only focus on cutting-edge music bands, but also on lighting devices, maps and other amazing visual works. Just like the thermal power plant in Inotai – which is now inactive but still spectacular with three symbolic cooling towers visible from a distance. The festival will fill the building with hundreds of artists and performances. The festival will take place between the dates: August 31 to September 3.
- Budapest cake with interesting flavors, the 19th century version – on Budapest’s birthday, on November 17, visitors will be able to taste the Budapest 150-year cake created by the winner of the cake-making competition. The goal of the competition is to create a cake with flavors that existed in 19th century Hungary, and to unite the various components while creating the essence of the three united cities. Each part of the cake symbolizes one part of the city. The components of the pashto part will have exotic components that were already excellent in Budapest in the 19th century such as chocolate, pomegranate and pineapple. The Buda section includes typical products from Budapest and its surroundings such as grapes, almonds and apricots. The old Pesht part will contain toppings and spices from the 70s-80s of the 1800s: vanilla, rose, anise and coffee. The winning cake will be presented and it will be possible to taste it on November 17th
- The city of Vosperm is awarded the title of European Capital of Culture (ECC). The title of European Capital of Culture is a recognition that the common space of European culture was created by the combined contribution of different countries and cities. It is conveyed in the language of art that European culture is shared and is always the result of cultural activity in a certain region. The Veszprém-Balaton European Capital of Culture program for 2023 officially began in January. The beginning of the program year marks the beginning of a period that will open new doors for all those who live and visit Veszprém.
