Ph:DR: “Strengthening control of iodized salt to overcome Iodine Deficiency Disorders”

Benin, through the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, launched, for the 26th edition, the mobilization against Disorders Due to Iodine Deficiency in Salt (TDCI). The official demonstrations took place on Friday October 27, 2023 at the town hall of Ouaké in the Donga department.

Since 1983, Benin has engaged in the fight against Iodine Deficiency Disorders in Salt (TDCI). And for this 26th Day of mobilization, the theme which will crystallize the reflections is entitled “strengthening the control of iodized salt to overcome Disorders Due to Iodine Deficiency”.

In 1990, the Health Assembly recognized, according to the Deputy Secretary General of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, representing the Minister, that the deficiency of iodine in salt was, in the world , the leading cause of preventable mental retardation, and aims to eliminate it as a public health problem. “The Government of Benin has committed itself totally and resolutely to the fight against malnutrition in all its forms (…), the main strategy to combat Iodine Deficiency Disorders is the universal iodization of salt (…) , the efforts of the Government and stakeholders mobilized in the fight against disorders due to iodine deficiency are yielding encouraging results. But it is therefore necessary not to give up and to continue our efforts (…). It is with this in mind that the Ministry, with the technical and financial support of the various partners, is committed to playing its full part,” underlined the representative of the Minister of Agriculture, Mr. Innocent TOGLA.

We must therefore be extra vigilant throughout the production and conservation chain to guarantee the consumption of adequately iodized salt, added Edmond DOSSA, on behalf of the Minister of Health.

Ouaké, a border commune in Togo, favors the existence of incoming and outgoing flows for the marketing of salt at the border. The First Deputy Mayor of the commune, Mr. Moustapha ZAKARI, promised that the municipal council will redouble its vigilance on border controls to ensure that the salt entering Beninese territory is adequately iodized.

The ceremony saw the massive participation of housewives and students from the General Education College of Ouaké called to relay information on the mobilization.
