Title: Happy Holiday to All Namesakes! Orthodox Church Celebrates the Memory of Saint Naum of Ohrid
Date: June 20, 2023
On June 20, the Orthodox Church celebrates the memory of Saint Naum of Ohrid, the youngest disciple of Saints Cyril and Methodius and a companion of Saint Kliment Ohridski. This day is designated for solemn celebrations by the Ohrid Bishopric, as it falls within the period of Lent.
Saint Naum, a Bulgarian from a noble family, made the decision to leave everything behind and join the apostles Cyril and Methodius in spreading their work. He is believed to be the brother of Kliment Ohridski, either spiritually or biologically, according to different sources. Together, the two brothers accompanied Cyril and Methodius on their journey to Rome, assisting them in the propagation of Christianity. After the passing of Methodius, Naum returned to Bulgaria and became one of the most prominent writers in the kingdom of Simeon the Great.
Naum played a significant role in the establishment of the Preslav Literary School, initially located in Pliska, where he worked from 886 to 893. Following Kliment Ohridski’s appointment as bishop of Drembitza in 893, Naum continued his literary endeavors at the Ohrid Literary School. During this period, he founded a monastery near Lake Ohrid, which later became known as the Monastery of Saint Naum. Shortly before his death in 910, Naum took monastic vows.
On this special occasion, we extend our warmest wishes to all those celebrating their name day, including Bisera, Bisera, and Nahum. The NOVA team congratulates them on the holiday and wishes them health, luck, and prosperity!
