Celebrating the 95th Birthday of Raúl Gómez García and Honoring Cultural Workers in Las Tunas, Cuba

Las Tunas.- This 14th of the last month of 2023 Raúl Gómez García, the poet of the Centennial Generation, would turn 95 years old; and one can imagine the young man of December 24, with feverish passion, in his total dedication in the fertile days of Moncada. This giving of oneself in and for a work that is loved, that is considered necessary and urges to be born, describes very well the rebellious, creative and often non-conforming spirit of those who sustain culture, in its different instances and functions.

Today, as on so many other occasions, it feeds and saves us, and it does so by virtue of women and men, some of whom received the tribute, on their Day, from the Cultural Plaza in the center of this city. For Eliades Ávila, his 45 years in the sector are summarized in a few words, although the reality of the facts speaks of extensive teaching work, as a painter and sculptor, as well as gallery director.

“My life has been, from a very young age, linked with artistic creation and I have tried to exalt Cuban Culture, giving my all, also, as a human being,” he commented in rapid flight, but with the roots in his words, after receiving the Distinction Raúl Gómez García, which his colleague Roger Antuña also deserved.

Also on the chest of Yamila Infante Pérez, director of the Martyrs of Barbados Memorial, was that insignia that she received with the joy of someone who has found among the workers of the union, colleagues and defenders of national roots. For these reasons, and for the imperative of honoring her History degree, she affirms that directing that museum fills her with pride and revitalizes her sustained commitment since she graduated from her university studies: defending culture.

Of that enduring vocation to found by all and for all, he spoke to 26 Eddy Crespo Vargas, one of the union members honored and creator of local Radio and Television for more than three decades. “The important thing is to be close to people, to their interests and concerns, that is what the audience will applaud about your work as a director. And in my career each day has been a learning experience; if I had to distinguish something it is the work group , each team that accompanies me in my ‘craziness’ that has helped me materialize my ideas.”

The vocation to serve others and, within that attitude, to do so by promoting and disseminating reading encourages Ana María Castillo Tratman, a woman who, sheltered by the books of the Provincial Library, puts her wisdom in pursuit of May others have shelter in literature as they walk through life. This task was also a reason for entertainment, along with that of twenty workers who, in different occupations, support a collective work, Las Tunas, Cuban and, in a certain way, universal.

On the day of tribute to the editor of the “Manifesto to the Nation”, Osnay Carrión, secretary of the Union of Cultural Workers, highlighted the sustained work of those who are “shield and sword of the country”, support for hard times, encouragement of the Homeland.
